Treatment of Plants Prior to Shipment

Our Socotra desert roses may be treated annually with imidacloprid, a systemic insecticide. Alcohol, insecticidal soap and neem oil based insecticides may also be applied to the plants before shipment.

How the Plants are Shipped

All plants to be exported to the neighbor islands of Hawaii, the mainland of the United States and internationally from our nursery in Hawaii will be shipped bare root (with no soil) and will be submitted for inspection by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture immediately prior to shipment.

Domestic Shipping Restrictions

We cannot ship our Socotra desert roses to some states, currently California, Arizona, Texas and Louisiana. These states have established quarantines against the burrowing nematode, Radopholus similis, the reniform nematode, Rotylenchulus reniformis, and others. Shipments of plants from Hawaii to these states for propagation purposes are prohibited unless they are grown in a nematode free nursery certified by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA). Additional federal quarantine requirements have been established for the Light Brown Apple Moth (LBAM), Epiphyas postvittana in shipments from Hawaii.

We are not aware of any literature indicating that Adenium species and other members of the plant family Apocynaceae host LBAM or the nematode species subject to the quarantines, and our testing of soil media and roots from Adenium socotranum has not shown the presence of these nematodes. However, because our plants were grown in our nursery prior to its certification by HDOA they cannot be certified and shipped to the states that have established quarantines.

Some states may require Phytosanitary Certificates for incoming shipments of certain plants from Hawaii. If these are required we can obtain certificates for our domestic customers at no additional charge.

Shipments to Florida

It is our understanding that shipments of Socotra desert roses to Florida are permissible but since these plants are not certified free of burrowing nematodes they cannot be moved to locations within 100 feet of restricted areas including commercial citrus groves, citrus nurseries, or approved citrus nursery. We do not offer for sale any plants intended for movement to these restricted areas.

Nursery stock consisting of other species of plants from our certified nursery can be moved to these areas if accompanied with a special burrowing nematode inspection tag or stamp. We apply our stamp to outer packages containing certified plants before shipment.

International Shipping Restrictions

We attempt to inform buyers of the shipping requirements for international shipments that we are aware of but these are subject to frequent change. It is incumbent on the buyer to obtain any required import permits and comply with all requirements of the receiving country. Some countries may prohibit all importation of plant materials.

Import permits and requirements often may include issuance of a Phytosanitary Certificate from the Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA) or U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). We can provide the certificates for our international customers for a fee of $100 each, which is at or below our cost. This fee must be paid when the order is placed and is nonrefundable. Multiple plants in a single shipment can be listed on one certificate.

Estimating Shipping Costs

We ship these plants via U.S. Postal Service (USPS) Priority Mail unless other shipping arrangements are specifically requested by the customer. Larger specimens of desert roses require oblong packaging and will not fit in flat rate Priority Mail boxes. Because the USPS calculates mailing costs for non-flat rate boxes bases on weight, dimensions and destination we cannot accurately calculate the shipping cost in advance, particularly for orders of multiple plants that may or may not be shipped in a single package. We will not know the actual cost of shipping until the item(s) are transported to the inspection station and cleared, the package is sealed and delivered to the post office. At check out estimated shipping costs will be added to the order and must be prepaid by the customer. If the actual cost of packaging and shipping is significantly less than the amount charged we will refund the excess charge to the customer via a PayPal transaction.
