Species Identification.  The plants that we obtained several years ago were misidentified by the supplier as true cardamom, Elettaria cardamomum.  When they bloomed it was readily apparent that the plants were actually false cardamom.  There are two species referred to as false cardamom Alpinia mutica and Alpinia nutans, are very similar and difficult to distinguish.  We are listing our plants as Alpinia mutica, but this identification has not been confirmed.

Uses.  Unlike true cardamom, which is primarily grown for its seeds used to make spices, the false cardamoms are primarily grown as landscaping plants in tropical and subtropical climates and for their highly aromatic leaves.  The leaves have been used as traditional medicines in Southeast Asia and have many culinary applications such as wrapping cooked fish and vegetables, and as a flavoring for rice dishes and teas, and for aromatherapy.  Our favorite use is to rub a leaf or two and place them in iced tea.  The flowers may also be used as an edible garnish in salads and in sugared form as cake decorations.  The seeds form in a hairy fruit.  They may have an offensive taste and are probably not usable for spice as is the true cardamom.

Growing False Cardamom.  These are hardy, fast growing, clumping gingers suitable for warm, semi-shady or shady areas in subtropical and tropical environments and also growing indoors as a house plant.  Propagation is from the rhizomes.

Availability. From our ONLINE STORE we will offer non-certified plants (bare root rhizomes) for shipment to all states except Arizona, California, Louisiana and Texas.  We do not recommend shipping these to areas with cold winter climates because they may be damaged by cold or freezing temperatures.  Potted plants will also be sold from outlets on Hawai`i island.  All of these are grown in Hawai`i and carry the Hawai`i Seal of Quality.
