Teosinte (Zea mays parviglumis)

Balsas Teosinte [Sacred Corn, Sweet Cane or Teosintile in the Nahuatl (Aztec) language] is the wild acestor of modern corn.  It is a nitrogen-fixing, bushy form of corn endemic to southern Mexico.  Five to 12 small seeds about the size of a grain of rice appear on the female ears.  Today it has wide use as a fodder crop and high resistance to the pests and diseases of corn.

Teosinte is easy to grow from seeds.

These seeds were grown in Florida, are a mixture of seed lots and the products of open pollination.  The germination rate for these is typically greater than 95%.  The average weight of one seed isabout  0.056g.  Ten gram packets contain about 180 seeds; a 100 gram bag contains about 1800 seeds.

Restrictions on Export Shipments.  Please contact us before placing orders for delivery of these seeds outside the United States so that we can determine the requirements of the importing country and if the items ordered can be shipped there.

The EU and some other countires require all incoming shipments of corn seeds to be from an area known to be free from the corn wilt disease caused by the bacterium Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii or the seeds must be tested and found to be free of this agent.  Since this disease is known to be present in Florida and we do not have the capbility to test these seeds, they cannot be shipped to countries with these restrictions.
