Nitrogen Fixing Corn Seeds (Zea mays)

A generic image

These are seeds are from varieties and landraces of corn (maize) that have retained the ability to fix nitrogen from the air.  Modern corn varieties have lost this ability and are dependent on nitrogen fixed by other plants, or more commonly from applications of nitrogen fertilizers. Please refer to our webpage for additional information about this corn.

Seeds of our nitrogen fixing corn varieties have been scarce, costly and in great demand.  Most of them originated from southern Mexico and because corn wilt disease may be present in this area the seeds cannot be exported to the European Union and some other countries.  Since the wilt disease is not present in Hawai`i, seeds originating from here may be shipped to the EU and some of the other countries that prohibit entry of the Mexican seeds.

We have been distributing small amounts of these seeds to our customers at very high cost and inventories of the seeds, particularly those of Hawaiian origin, were largely depleted by late 2023.  Our goals were to develop new sources of non-GMO, Hawaiian origin seeds, distribute these without patents or other proprietary restrictions, and become a reliable, lower cost supplier of seeds produced by small farms on Hawai`i island.

We are pleased to announce that seeds from the first and second crops of significant size grown in Hilo, Hawai`i are now available for sale.

We reserve the right to limit or prohibit all purchases of these seeds by individual customers.  Seed availability and inventories are subject to change without notice.

Notice Concerning International Orders

Because of the complexity of regulations and the extremely high costs of processing orders for shipment to most destinations outside the U.S. we have established minimum order sizes and no longer allow placement of these orders through this online store.  Please CONTACT US for additional information if you would like to place an international order for these seeds.

BUYER BEWARE

Many corn varieties develop 'brace roots' seen along the lower part of the corn plant and they are a type of support system to help hold the corn plant upright. These are not nitrogen-fixing aerial roots, which are usually covered by a mucus like gel and only seen on the true nitrogen-fixing corn strains. Beware of corn seeds being sold as 'Nitrogen-Fixing Corn', using photos of brace roots. These are probably not seeds of nitrogen-fixing corn being sold.
