Ho`omalu Ka`u (HK) is a community-based, nonprofit organization with a mission "to perpetuate, protect, and conserve the lands, health, knowledge, cultures and history of Ka`u and its people."

Believing that education is one of the keys to involving people in conscientious conservation, HK published this 33 page, full color booklet titled, Native Plants of the Ka`u Dryland Forest, First Edition as a guide to fifteen of the dominant native trees, shrubs and vines in the dryland forest.  There are many more species found in the remaining dryland forests throughout the Hawaiian Islands, but this booklet focuses on plants growing at a HK owned site located in the Manuka area of the District of Ka`u at an elevation of about 1,800 feet.   The site is intended for a future heritage center—a place where the cultural, historical and traditional knowledge and artifacts of Ka`u could be stored, preserved and accessed by local residents and visitors. The booklet includes the Hawaiian name, binomial scientific name, plant description, Hawaiian medicinal uses, cultural information, propagation techniques, photos and drawings illustrating each species from the Manuka site.

There is no other general publication in Hawai`i exclusively devoted to native dryland plants.

Sustainable Bioresources, LLC assists Ho`omalu Ka'u with distribution of the booklet by advertising and selling it on this website.    Contact us for discounted pricing on multiple copies.  Ho`omalu Ka'u is responsible for order fulfillment and ships the booklet to customers.
