International Moringa Seed Bank

2023 Catalog

USER GUIDE

In this catalog we list and briefly describe the various species and varieties of moringa represented in our seed bank and the seed lot numbers that may be available for sale in our Online Store.  More detailed descriptions of the varieties and ecotypes of Moringa oleifera, the most widely cultivated species, are found in this Compilation.  Descriptions of the other species will be available in the species pages in the Moringaceae Section of this website.  Most of the species pages are incomplete and are under development.

Categories and Lot Numbers

Our moringa seeds are categorized in this catalog section by species and variety and then by seed source (location grown).   Within each category seeds available in the seed bank are listed by lot numbers. The format of our lot numbers begins with a field coding for the species, followed by the country source/supplier code field and a final numeric code indicating the shipment number from the supplier. Each of these fields are separated by dashes.   If there is more than one supplier from a given country  the supplier code will end in a suffix code in parenthesis to identify the specific supplier in that country.  For example, the lot number MO-IND(E)-04 identifies the seed lot as the fourth shipment of Moringa oleifera (MO) from India (IND), supplier “E”.

Mixtures of Moringa oleifera (MO) seeds from multiple lots were first offered in April 2019.  For mixtures, the format of our lot numbers begins with a field coding for the species (MO), followed by “MIX”, indicating the lot is from a mixture of sources, an abbreviation for the region from which the seeds were obtained,  code and a final numeric code indicating the batch number.   For example, the lot number MO-MIX-AFR-01 identifies the lot as a mixture of seed lots from Africa, batch one.  Our Worldwide Mixture MO-MIX-WW-01 consists of seeds from all regions.

Seed Mixtures

Our seed lot mixtures provide an economical way to obtain a genetically diverse selection of seeds from a specific geographic area or varieties.   Since the identity and seed source of specific trees grown from these mixtures cannot be determined, these mixtures may not be suitable for field trials or other research purposes.

Organic Claims

Moringa is usually grown without the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, and most of our seed suppliers claim that their seeds are “organic” or “organically grown”.  Particularly for seeds sourced outside the U.S.,  it is difficult or impossible for us to verify these claims.  We have even found some moringa products displaying the USDA certified organic logo to be lacking confirmatory documentation.  For these reasons we are no longer reporting the organic status of moringa seeds unless they are certified by an appropriate program or we can independently verify that the seeds have met certification requirements.

Farms producing certified organic crops may jeopardize their certification status by possessing or planting non-certified seeds on their property.

Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) Status

Some suppliers advertise their seeds as Non-GMO and have certifications affirming this.  This status is not listed in our catalog listings. We are not aware of any use of these genetic modification methods to develop new varieties of any moringa species, and we are unable to verify any claims relating to this.

Seed Availability

Please check our store listings for the lot number(s) of interest to obtain the most current information on availability.  Listings for our seed products will be updated frequently but may not be current.  Seed inventories are subject to rapid change and some of the seed lots listed here may depleted from our on-site seed bank before our website and online store listings are updated.    If you need to confirm availability please contact us.

Small inventories of most seed lots may be kept in a secure off-site repository.   We may be able to retrieve out of stock seeds from the off-site repository for critical research purposes but access to the remote repository is infrequent and requires special arrangements.  Seeds will not be retrieved from the repository for routine sales.

Germination Data

We test most of our seed lots for viability before they are offered for sale.   Germination data, from our most recent tests, is usually presented in the catalog and store listings. The small size of some seed lots and other constraints may prevent testing or limit testing to small numbers of seeds.  For these reasons our germination results may not be reproducible.

Low or zero germination rates were found with some seed lots, particularly the rarer African species. These seeds may germinate under other test conditions or be non-viable.

If no germination data is shown testing may be in progress or there is an insufficient amount of seeds left in the inventory to conduct testing.

Selecting Seed Lots for Purchase

Select Seeds Using this Catalog.  Within our online store moringa seeds are arranged by categories and offered for sale by lot number.  We suggest browsing through this catalog section making a list of the lot numbers you may be interested in before going into our store section, which may not have detailed information on the seed lots.  This will reduce the time and tedium of switching back and fourth between the catalog and store sections of the website.

Maximize Genetic Diversity.  If you need seeds for new farms or large scale plantings we recommend purchasing small amounts of a wide selection of seeds rather than bulk amounts of a single varieties.  This will maximize the genetic diversity of your crop and allow you to select the best performing varieties for larger plantings.  Also, avoid focusing on named varieties (cultivars) unless you are looking for varieties with specific characteristics.  Most of the named varieties were developed in India with characteristics for optimal production of edible pods.  For production of leaves, or growing moringa in other areas we strongly recommend including some of the unnamed varieties and ecotypes from other geographic areas in your plantings.  These will provide greater genetic diversity and may be more productive or better adapted to growing conditions outside of India than the named varieties.

We Value Your Feedback

We do not have farms of our own so we largely depend on our customers and research associates to provide information on how the seeds from our bank perform in their growing areas.  This data will be compiled and presented on this website for public benefit.

DISCLAIMER

We are largely dependent on our suppliers for data on the identification and characteristics of the seeds in our bank, this catalog and that are sold by our company.  Most of these seeds are from foreign sources and we are generally unable to independently verify the information provided to us.

Moringa oleifera, Dwarf and Semi-dwarf varieties

Several compact varieties of Moringa oleifera have been developed in India.  These are suited for gardeners with limited outdoor space or for growing permanently in containers.  They can be grown indoors in cold climates or moved indoors during the winter.

The true dwarf varieties have the same general form as their standard sized counterparts but generally grow to a maximum height of only about 1.0 – 2.5 meters (3 – 8 feet).  The standard forms can grow to 10 – 12 meters (30 – 40 feet) if untrimmed.  Semi-dwarf varieties with intermediate heights are also available.  As with the standard sized trees, dwarf and semi-dwarf trees should be trimmed regularly to encourage side branching and maximize leaf production.  Start trimming when the tree is about 1 meter (3 feet tall).  Untrimmed trees will grow quickly to their maximum height with most of the leaves and pods at the top. These overgrown trees may need to be trimmed repeatedly to about 50% of their original height to encourage side branching.

Information on the origins of some varieties is scant but dwarfs known to be derived from the annual, determinant height PKM1 and PKM2 varieties are the most widely available.  We offer small quantities of seeds of dwarf varieties from India and occasionally very limited quantities of seeds from Hawai`i.  The Hawaiian seeds are the products of open pollination and may be hybrids of trees of standard size.

For additional information about these varieties refer to this page.

We have acquired new seed lots of several dwarf varieties and these are now available from our online store :

Andipatty

This is a semi-dwarf variety of undetermined origin.  The quality and taste of leaves and pods are good. The trees are resistant to pest and diseases, and grow quickly even in poor soil.

Bhagya KDM1

The following information was provided primarily by our supplier of seeds of this variety in India and was edited to improve organization and clarity:

History of Development: Bhagya KDM was developed by Drs. B. M. Madalgeri and Ravindra Mulge of the Kittur Rani Channamma College of Horticulture, Arabhavi at Paramaddi, Karanataka.  Seeds of this institute-developed variety were in high demand locally but the lack of promotional activities and limited supplies limited plantings and awareness of it outside of the Karnataka.

Characteristics: This is a fast growing, semi-dwarf perrenial variety suitable for high-density planting and can be maintained at a height of two to four meters by pruning and training. It was from selection of plants from the variety Periyakulam 3 (PKM 3) beginning in 1998 and released in 2011.

Yield: This variety produces 350 to 400 pods per plant in the first year and 800 to 1000 pods in the second year.

Oil Content: Testing performed by International Seed Testing Association (ISTA)methods at a nationally accredited laboratory in India that the seeds in Lot # MO-IND(P)-BGYA-02 has a crude oil content of 37+1 %, and an oil content of 30 – 33% for this lot of seeds.

Location Grown: These seeds were grown on a farm at Gajaradad, Karnataka, India.

Seeds of this species are becoming increasingly scarce.

India: MD-IND(O)-01.  A small seed lot of uncertain origin and high viability.

Saudi Arabia, Al Madinah:  MP-SAUD(A)-01.  Harvested in 2014.  Germination rates in the range of 90-100%.

Saudi Arabia, Al Madinah:  MP-SAUD(A)-02.  Harvested in 2015.  Germination rates in the range of 90-100%.

We have lost our supplier of Saudi Arabian seeds and are out of stock.  Arabian moringa seeds have exceptionally high germination rates even after several years in frozen storage.

United States, Hawaiʻi, Moloka’i Island, Kaunakakai: MP-USHI(G)-01.  This small lot of seeds was the first from this species known to have been produced in Hawai`i.  The seed bearing trees were from our Saudi Arabian seed lots.  The appearance and growth of trees from this seed lot was typical of the species.

United States, Hawaiʻi, Moloka’i Island, Kaunakakai: MP-USHI(G)-02, 03, 04.

These rare seeds are from trees grown for us on a farm near Kaunakakai on Moloka`i island in Hawai`i.  The trees from which the seeds were produced were originally seedlings that we grew from seeds collected in the wild in 2014 and 2015 in the Al Madinah area of Saudi Arabia (seed lots MP-SAUD(A)-01, 02).

Seedlings grown from the Moloka`i seeds emerge with the unique, narrow red primary leaves typical of Moringa peregrina.  However, with continued growth, plants from some seed lots have not developed the needle like leaf structure typical of the species.

The trees from these seeds growing at our facility are immature and have not bloomed.  The appearance of their flowers could help us determine if these are intraspecific hybrids, and the leaves may change to their normal shape as they mature.  The unusual appearance of the leaves may result from growing conditions in Hawa’i. It is also possible that the Moloka`i seeds are the products of cross pollination with other moringa species (M. oleifera and M. stenopetala) that are also grown on the Moloka`i farm.  Until we have more definitive information these seeds should be considered putative intraspecific hybrids.

These Moloka`i seeds typically have a high germination rate and will be offered for sale through our online store in April 2023.

In recent years, seeds of this species were scarce, offered at high cost and had low viability.   Some seeds sold as M. stenopetala were actually hulled seeds of the common M. oleifera.

We are attempting to increase domestic supplies of these seeds by growing the trees on several farms in Hawaii.  The trees in Molokai are now producing good yields of seeds and these typically have high germination rates.

Ethiopia:  MS-ETPA(A)-01.  A small seed lot for research purposes.  Estimated germination rate 75%.

Haiti, Carries Area:  MS-HAIT(A)-01.  A small seed lot for research purposes. Germination data unavailable.

Haiti, Carries Area:  MS-HAIT(A)-02.  A small seed lot for research purposes. Germination rate 14-27%.

United States, Florida:  MS-USFL(A)-03.  Germination rate 41%..

United States, Hawaiʻi, Oahu: MS-USHI(E)-01.  Germination data unavailable.

United States, Hawaiʻi, Moloka’i Island, Kaunakakai: MS-USHI(G)-04.  A large seed lot in stock.  The seed producing tree was grown from a Haitian seed.  Based on limited data, Hawaiian grown trees from the Haitian seeds tend to be smaller, produce seeds faster and have a higher seed yield than trees grown from the Florida sourced seeds.

United States, Hawaiʻi, Moloka’i Island, Kaunakakai: MS-USHI(G)-05.  The seed producing tree was from a Florida sourced seed.  Based on limited data, Hawaiian grown trees from the Florida source tend to be larger, slower to produce seeds and have a lower seed yield than trees grown from Haitian seeds.

United States, Hawaiʻi, Moloka’i Island, Kaunakakai: MS-USHI(G)-06.  A large seed lot in stock.  The seed producing tree was grown from a Haitian seed. Based on limited data, Hawaiian grown trees from the Haitian seeds tend to be smaller, produce seeds faster and have a higher seed yield than trees grown from the Florida sourced seeds.
